This Panhandle town began as the headquarters for the T Anchor Ranch. Today the city on the plains is known as the gateway to Palo Duro Canyon State Park as well as Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Canyon is located 15 minutes south of Amarillo via I-27.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park. You can get a taste for the Old West with a visit to Palo Duro Canyon State Park, home of the nation's second largest canyon. Here, against a backdrop of a 600-foot cliff, visitors enjoy the summer production of TEXAS, a story that transports visitors back to the days of the Old West.

Elkins Ranch Cowboy Morning Breakfast.  Everyone knows a cowboy has to start off the day with a good breakfast and here's your chance to feel like a real cowboy for a morning. Elkins Ranch is located next to the entrance of Palo Duro Canyon State Park and covers thousands of acres of sprawling rangeland and scenic canyon land. The Elkins Ranch Cowboy Morning Breakfast is offered daily from April through October and reservations are required. Guests receive a 15-minute Jeep ride tour of Palo Duro Canyon en route to the campsite set against the canyon's cliffs. Breakfast includes scrambled eggs, sausage, country-style potatoes, buttermilk biscuits, cream gravy, cinnamon rolls, fruit, cowboy coffee and juice. Cowboy Morning Breakfast guests are then entertained by local singer/songwriter Ed Montana. A chuckwagon dinner, featuring a mesquite-grilled rib eye steak, is also be offered in the evening from April to October. Elkins Ranch also offers Jeep tours of Palo Duro Canyon. Tours are offered daily all year, weather permitting. Reservations for Jeep tours are recommended. Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. This extensive museum offers sections on petroleum, paleontology, transportation, art, and Western history. The petroleum wing has numerous displays on the oil industry and West Texas. Located on the campus of West Texas A M University at 2401 4th Ave.
