Four Seasons Hotel, Austin

The Four Seasons hotel is built along the Town Lake shoreline with views of sunsets (and no better place to watch the nightly exodus of bats from beneath Congress Avenue Bridge on summer nights). The hotel prides itself on pampering guests in the manner of fine European hotels, amidst a Southwest decor that somehow manages to appear elegant even though rugged touches fill the decor. A rugged crystal and iron chandelier hangs over the lobby. Sofas are upholstered in brown and white steerhide, and you'll find are tables made from genuine Mission doors with ox yoke legs; an elk head is mounted over the fireplace.

Half of the 292 guest rooms offer views over Town Lake, and there’s an outdoor pool overlooking the lake. The hotel is within walking distance of the Convention Center and the 6th Street entertainment district. The adjacent Shoreline Grill always draws raves.

Location: 98 San Jacinto Blvd. (downtown)
