Woodburn House, Austin

Woodburn House is located in Hyde Park, Austin's oldest residential suburb. About a mile north of downtown, the turn-of-the-century neighborhood hosts a collection of Victorian homes, Texas frame farmhouses, and craftsman-style bungalows. The innkeepers here can provide a brochure detailing a walking tour of this historic area, pointing out the Elisabet Ney Museum and moonlight towers that once illuminated the neighborhood.

Built in 1909, the Woodburn House is named for former owner Bettie Hamilton Woodburn, the daughter of a provisional governor of Texas. Its rooms are simply and functionally decorated, with rocking chairs and firm mattresses.

The two rooms upstairs have access to a wide balcony, from which you can watch squirrels darting up the pecan and elm trees. This is the kind of place where you can feel comfortable lounging on the living room couch, shoes off, watching a ball game on TV. From Friday through Monday, guests enjoy a complimentary hot gourmet breakfast; weekday visitors receives complimentary continental fare Tuesday through Thursday.

Location: 4401 Ave. D., Austin
