Austin-Bergstrom International Airport
The airport opened in the spring of 1999 at a cost of approximately $496 million while private developers were responsible for the $100-million cost for other facilities such as air cargo. The result is an easy to maneuver airport (just one terminal) located southeast of the city. The facility includes the $115 million Barbara Jordan Passenger Terminal, named for the first African-American woman elected to the Texas Senate and a three-time Congresswoman. You'll see a statue of the late Barbara Jordan downstairs near the Austin information booth. Other distinct Austin touches are seen throughout the building. The Market Place on the concourse level has a stage for occasional live music but expect to hear Texas music on an everyday basis on the overhead system. Eateries at the airport include many Austin favorites: The Salt Lick (barbecue), Matt's Famous El Rancho (Tex-Mex...we always get their good, albeit overpriced breakfast tacos before morning flights), Amy's Ice Cream (known for their premium ice creams), Schlotzky's Deli and more.
