Austin Festivals for Kids

Austin hosts festivals and special events year-round and several of these celebrations are designed for the younger residents and visitors. Check out these annual events sure to please kids of all ages:

March: Austin-Travis County Livestock Show and PRCA Rodeo offers youngsters a chance to feel like a cowboy. Watch professionals compete and schoolchildren show their prize-winning livestock.

April: Celebrate spring at Safari, a family festival that recognizes nature and the environment. Sponsored by the Austin Nature Center.

June–August: Symphony Square hosts Children’s Day Art Park with storytellers and musicians.

October: Boo! Ghosts and ghouls make their appearance at two events designed to delight, not terrify, young visitors. The Austin Children’s Museum (512/472-2494) hosts Gruseum, a costumed celebration for young children. The Jourdan-Bachman Pioneer Farm (512/837-1215) celebrates the season with a Halloween haunt. And finally, bring your costumed youngster to the Austin Symphony’s (512/476-6064) annual Halloween concert for kids.

December: Austin becomes the land of Dickens at the Victorian Christmas on 6th Street . Booths sell period costumes and accessories, and carolers share the spirit of the season. Zilker Park lights up with Yulefest and the Trail of Lights, a magical wonderland of lights.
