Austin Nightlife

Austin is especially noted for its music scene. Over 100 clubs have helped Austin earn the title as “The Live Music Capital of the World” and any type of music can be heard nightly from local and internationally known talents.

Much of the music takes place in the downtown entertainment district, 6th Street. This historic seven-block area, which is sometimes compared to New Orleans’ Bourbon Street, is home to many nightclubs and restaurants, as well as eclectic shops open during the day. Here the music starts late and the fun lasts until the early hours of the morning. All types of music are represented along this bustling boulevard where Austinites and visitors can enjoy an evening of club-hopping any night of the week.

A more sophisticated crowd is drawn to the Warehouse District, an area west of Sixth Street. Here cigar bars, martini bars, and dining draw an after-work crowd.

Outside of 6th Street, the beat continues in clubs near the UT campus, at special events in venues ranging from the shores of Town Lake to high-tech concert halls, and at restaurants and bars throughout the city. The Austin Chronicle, a free publication that’s distributed at bookstores and grocery stores throughout town, gives an excellent rundown of who’s playing where so that you can plan your night on the town. The XLent section of the Austin American-Statesman also offers a good look at the happenings in town every Thursday.

Many nightclubs enforce a “21 and over” age restriction. Those permitting youth admission are noted in the text.
