Jeffrey's Restaurant & Bar, Austin

Austin isn't considered a hot spot for fine dining like Dallas or Houston but at Jeffrey's, it definitely holds its own. For adventurous cuisine with a gourmand flair, this fine dining establishment in the historic Clarksville neighborhood takes high honors. Chef David Garrido, acclaimed by the James Beard Foundation, makes magic with an amazing array of flavors.

For starters, Chef Garrido suggests shredded goose on a small blue corn taco sauced with fresh mango puree. Oysters are a specialty, served crispy on root chips (sea sprouts) with habañero honey aioli. Sturgeon, pecan-wood smoked for sweetness and served in an orange champagne sauce, is accompanied by a black Oregon truffle in a wine/butter/shallot sauce.

Exotic dishes like elk, served with hazelnut wild rice and huckleberry thyme sauce, are also on the menu. Be sure to leave room for desserts, too (you can't go wrong with the creme brulee) or a selection of cheeses.
