Manuel's Downtown, Austin

Manuel’s offers interesting variations of such favorites as grilled (not fried) flautas filled with your choice of shredded beef, pork, chicken, or, for vegetarians, black beans and cheese or mushrooms. The chile rellenos are poblano peppers stuffed with sweet corn, cilantro, and cheese. True Tex-Mex fans will also find fajitas and enchiladas.

No lard and no preservatives go into anything cooked and served at this lively spot.

We also like Manuel's North, located in the Arboretum area at 10201 Jollyville Road. That location includes outdoor seating that's popular on spring evenings.

Location: 310 Congress Ave., Austin

Part of town: downtown Austin

Telephone:512-472-7555

Hours: open for lunch, dinner daily
