Shopping in Austin

Vintage clothing to couture, imported coffees to Texas-made crafts, antiques to trendy furniture—no matter what you’re seeking, an Austin store undoubtedly offers it.

Many Austin shops reflect the relaxed lifestyle of the city. Downtown, several shopping districts are filled with funky boutiques, used clothing stores, and unique gift emporiums. Modern malls offer high-end and mass market shopping for national brands and designer labels on the fringes of the city limits.

Shopping Districts:

West End
As Sixth Street winds beyond the entertainment district and crosses Lamar Boulevard, the atmosphere moves from funky to fine, evolving from hip T-shirt joints to highbrow fashion establishments and gift boutiques. At the intersection of 6th and Lamar, some of Austin’s largest retail operations have recently sprung to life. Further west, the West End offers plenty of excellent shopping in specialty stores sprinkled with a selection of fine restaurants. (Downtown Austin)

Shops to See: Pecan Street Emporium, Whit Hanks Antiques & Decorative Arts, Whole Foods Market

The Drag
For a true Austin shopping experience, consider an afternoon on the Drag, the stretch of Guadalupe Street that runs adjacent to the University of Texas campus. This strip is peppered with shops aimed at the college student. Unfortunately, the Drag has always had a reputation as a hangout; panhandling is illegal but not unusual. (North Austin)

Shops to See: Renaissance Market

Kerbey Lane and Jefferson Square
This charming enclave of boutiques is located just off Austin’s medical district on West 35th Street between Kerbey Lane and Jefferson Street. It is lined with homes converted to shops, each filled with unique gift items, collectibles, or fashions. Jefferson Square is a small open-air center with high-priced shops and fine items.

South Congress Avenue
Funky collectibles, Mexican imports, out-of-this-world costumes, and a truly flippant Austin atmosphere make this an eclectic district for those looking for something a little different. Park and walk from shop to shop. (South Austin)

Shops to See: Allens Boots

West Lynn
The quiet mood of the residential neighborhood of West Lynn, west of the capitol, is reflected in the laid-back shops of this district. Enjoy some shopping, then a snack at a genuine drug store fountain. (Downtown Austin)
