Treaty Oak, Austin

This 600-year old oak captured the nation's attention in 1989 when it was intentionally poisoned. The tree is the last survivor of a group of historic trees that were once named Council Oaks dating back to their use by Native Americans as a meeting site. Alos, according to Texas legend, Stephen F. Austin once signed a treaty with Native Americans beneath these branches.

Today one-third of the original tree, once called the finest example of a tree in North America, is gone, but Austinites are grateful for how much has been saved from the malicious herbicide poisoning, thanks to help from well-wishers throughout the nation.

Location: 503 Baylor Street (downtown, just west of Lamar Boulevard)
