Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse, Dallas

The fame of Sonny Bryan's barbecue has spread far beyond the Dallas area. For out-of-towners as well as thousands of loyal locals, Sonny Bryan's is barbecue in the Big D. For one thing, this place looks like a barbecue joint should. Small and decidedly no frills, it seems to have been transported from a small Texas town and dropped among the freeways and high-rises. Located just northwest of the downtown area, Sonny Bryan's is a lunchtime legend; its tiny dining area equipped with benches and old school desks is often thronged with both white and blue collar fans.

The menu, likewise, is no frills. Ribs dripping with a slightly sweet sauce, smoked Eckridge sausage, or sliced beef on a bun are the staples. Or order any meat dinner-style by adding coleslaw, barbecue beans, and a hamburger bun that serves as bread. Huge onion rings and french fries are other popular menu items. All meals are served on paper plates (good heavy ones that can take the weight in case you can't find a seat), with real metal flatware and, incredibly, crisp white cloth napkins that seem as out of place in this joint as a tuxedo in a pool hall.

Sonny Bryan's has grown so successful that today Dallas is dotted with them. The other locations offer a few additional dishes not served at the original Inwood Road pit, including chicken-fried steak, chicken-fried chicken, salads, chicken wings, hamburgers, and baked potatoes.
