Crosstown BBQ, Elgin

Crosstown is located just down the street from the original home of Southside Market in a part of town filled with century-old buildings, the kind that give a barbecue joint atmosphere like no mere modern structure can. And, in good old-fashioned barbecue style, the no-frills decor includes touches like old metal folding chairs.

But atmosphere never satisfied anyone's appetite -- barbecue does. Sample Crosstown's own sausage, an all-beef spicy version that holds up the Elgin name. Or tender brisket, crusty pork ribs, moist chicken, or even a little different fare: mutton ribs.

We tried the sausage as well as the pork ribs, the specialty of the house, and found them tender and flavorful, spiked with a spicy rub that any pork lover would enjoy.

Location: 202 S. Avenue C, Elgin

Tel. 512-281-5594

Hours: Open daily for lunch and dinner.
