Duke's BBQ Smokehouse
Georgetown, Texas

Many Texas BBQ joints are places to grab a family pack or sit down for a quick meal. Duke's is all that--but it's also a place for live music, dinner on the outdoor porch, or a group event. Sure you'll push your tray through the line like the best of the Lone Star State carry-outs, but once you check out, you'll find a massive indoor dining room with Texas decor and adjoining dining porch and a backyard picnic area.

But the dining room is only the backdrop of any dining experience. The true test is what comes out on that tray and at Duke's it's no disappointment.

We opted for two of the many platters. Paris selected Big John, a 1/3 pound meat platter, while John selected the Hungry Man Plate with two meat selections. Then came the hard part: choosing those meats. We both opted for brisket, a lean, tender meat that's prepared in a unique style at Duke's: dipped in milk, rolled in dry pepper rub, and slow smoked (15 hours) over mesquite and oak.

Sausage is another top choice--prepared by Slovachek Sausage in Snook, Texas as it has been since 1957. The beef and pork blend comes in mild and spicy (our favorite).

Other choices include smoked turkey breast, lemon pepper sprinkled and smoked chicken, rosemary seasoned pork loin, or St. Louis style pork ribs.

One note about Duke's: prices are somewhat higher than you would expect to find at more casual barbecue eateries in the state.
