Uncle Kunkel's Bar-B-Q, Johnson City

This is a mom-and-pop operation at its best. Ray and Rosie Kunkel have been barbecueing for years, providing all the catering for the LBJ Ranch and for Mrs. Johnson. Word has it that Mrs. Johnson names the Kunkels' ribs her favorite, stopping by to pick up an order along with slaw and potato salad.

It's easy to see why the former first lady is so smitten with this barbecue. Try the prize-winning pork ribs, brisket, or sausage, or one of the other meats available by special order. They're all winners in our book.

The Kunkels offer a small country-style dining room, but get here early. Their barbecue is available only on weekends, and when it's sold out, the door is closed.

Location: 208 US 281 South, Johnson City
