Colorado Bend State Park

Location: follow US 183 north to Lampasas, turn west on FM 580 for 24 miles to Bend and follow the signs 4 miles to the park entrance; (915) 628-3240

Recommended for: primitive camping, hiking, fishing, swimming, mountain biking, birding, nature study, cave tours

This primitive park above the Highland Lakes chain is located along a canyon of the Colorado River and is a favorite with birders.

Visitors can also take guided tours to Gorman Falls and guided wild cave tours; reservations are recommended for these tours. Primitive camping is available and a main campground offers potable water, chemical toilets, and a boat ramp.

Nature lovers will find over 11 miles of hiking trails as well as eight miles of mountain bike trails. Birders can add to their life list and try to spot some of the 155 species found in the park, including golden-cheeked warblers, black-capped vireos, and bald eagles.
