POTD: Central Texas Coral Snake

October 8, 2007 by Paris and John

As the months turn to fall (even though it is still 90 degrees), the snakes are starting to move more, even during daylight hours. Here’s a closeup of a coral snake taken this weekend near Austin. Remember how to tell the poisonous coral snake from the non-harmful king snake:

Red and yellow, kill a fellow,
Red and black, friend to Jack.

You’ll see the adjacent red and yellow stripes on this snake; a king snake would have red bands touching black bands.
