Lance Armstrong may have pedaled past Paris’ most prominent landmarks during his many Tour de France victories, but not even the triumphant Texan has cycled past the sight of a crimson cowboy hat perched atop an Eiffel Tower replica that greets the riders arriving at the Lamar County city dubbed the “Second Largest Paris in the World” for an annual race for first place in the Tour de Paris.
Piling pancakes on their plate, participants fill up on carbs at an all you can eat breakfast before strapping on their helmets and heading for the starting line. Approximately 800 riders will get it in gear for the 15k, 40k, 70k and 100k races, which takes the amateur athletes through the city’s historic downtown.
Riders who aren’t tuckered out by the exertion can tuck in to a post-race repast of hamburgers and fruit smoothies.
When: July 18, 2009 (staggered races begin at 8 a.m.)
Where: The race begins and ends at Love Civic Center in Paris.
