Mardi Gras Ball at The Tremont House in Galveston

Before Ash Wednesday approaches, celebrate amid an Asian-inspired ambiance at The Tremont House hotel’s annual Mardi Gras Ball, where the theme dreamed up for 2010 is the Chinese New Year. A happening with heart, a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Rosenberg Library (a direct descendant of the state’s first public library), which was damaged in Hurricane Ike.

Guests can gather at the hotel’s open bar and sample an array of Asian fare at the buffet while the music of Austin’s The Brew lofts through the lobby and the beat of the Dr. Michael White Jazz Quartet beckons Ball attendees to the dining area. The hotel’s symphony of sounds will mingle with those of marching bands as floats file past during the Momus Night Parade, which will stop in front of the hotel for a performance.

Post-parade, revelers can ring in the Chinese New Year with a Houston troupe of Chinese lion and dragon dancers, then trip the light fantastic to the tunes of an orchestra. Guests can start the day with breakfast as the party draws to a close.

Ball attendees can book a special two-night Tremont House package, which includes two tickets to the elegant event and parade viewing, a Friday performance by the Dr. Michael White Jazz Quartet and a Mardi Gras-themed menu at the Tremont Cafe. The package, available for February 12 – 14, 2010, starts at $1,000.
