Navasota is known as The Blues Capital of Texas, and just as the town is the heart of the genre in the Lone Star state, the music of Mance Lipscomb is the community’s life’s blood.
His voice may have been forever stilled in 1976, but the memory of his melodies lives on whenever a guitar chord is strummed in the region he called home. This spring Navasota will honor the birthday of a son of an ex-slave whose true name (Beau De Glen Lipscomb) gave way to Mance– a shortened form of the word emancipation and a suitable sobriquet for a man whose songs can let spirits take flight.
Join Texas Johnny Boy, Rich DelGrosso and Don Kesee in a salute to the soulful songster. The concert is free to the public, which is also invited to learn more about Mance Lipscomb and other Texas blues artists with a visit to Navasota Blues Alley.
When: April 10, 2010, beginning at 2 p.m.
Where: Behind Navasota Blues Alley at 129 E. Washington Avenue in Mance Lipscomb Park in Navasota.
