Tour de Paris Celebrates 25th Year

Lance Armstrong may have pedaled past Paris' most prominent landmarks during his many Tour de France victories, but not even the triumphant Texan has cycled past the sight of a crimson cowboy hat perched atop an Eiffel Tower replica that greets the riders arriving at the Lamar County city dubbed the "Second Largest Paris in the World" for an annual race for first place in the Tour de Paris.

Piling pancakes on their plate, participants fill up on carbs at an all you can eat breakfast before strapping on their helmets and heading for the starting line. Approximately 800 riders will get it in gear for the 15k, 40k, 70k and 100k races, which takes the amateur athletes through the city's historic downtown.

Riders who aren't tuckered out by the exertion can tuck in to a post-race repast of hamburgers and fruit smoothies.

When: July 18, 2009 (staggered races begin at 8 a.m.)

Where: The race begins and ends at Love Civic Center in Paris.

Walker County Fair in Huntsville

When: March 27 - April 5, 2009

Where: Walker County Fairgrounds in Huntsville, Texas

Corral the kids in the car and head to Huntsville for a week-long round up of rodeo activities and carnival fun that has been a Texas tradition since 1978.

Events

If the excitement of barrel racing doesn't rope you in to the stands at the rodeo arena, the steer roping and team roping events will. Cheer on the participants in the youth edition or thrill at the skill of PRCA members.

Let your fantasies of fame become reality by signing up to perform in the Country Music Star competition. Held at the fair's main stage, the winner will receive a cash prize, a recording demo and the chance for a recoding contract.

If you're hankering for some tried and true Texas fare, let the savory smell of brisket lead you to the BBQ/Chili Cook-Off, just one of the many contests held during the fair. Competitors will also battle for a blue ribbon in the following: canned and baked goods contest, clothing, photography, quilts and horticulture.

A staple at southern festivals, pageants play a prominent role at the Walker County Fair. A fair prince, princess and queen will be crowned during the festivities.

Children's Activities

Brave little buckaroos can rustle up the gumption to get into the arena for the Little Tyke Rodeo. Competitions include stick horse barrel racing, dummy roping, hay hauling and goat typing.

For the little animal lover in your family, there's a children's barnyard petting zoo complete with cuddly chicks, bunnies, ducks, and a bottle-fed calf.

From bumper cars to the tilt-a-whirl, the fair offers over 25 classic carnival rides and attractions for both the young and the young at heart. Try to win a stuffed toy for your sweetheart, look out on the fairgrounds from the top of the Ferris wheel, and saddle up for a ride back to your childhood as a menagerie of merry-go-round horses "gallop" in time to a playful tune.

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day in the Town of Shamrock

St. Patrick's Day Festival

When: March 13 - 15, 2009

Where: Events take place throughout the town of Shamrock.

St. Patrick's Day is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate the wearing of the green than with a trip to the Texas Panhandle town of Shamrock for an annual three-day salute to the Emerald Isle. Here are a few of the events listed on the Irish-themed itinerary:

Do you have the luck of the Irish? Find out as you try to win a stuffed animal at one of the midway games at the carnival after waving at the procession of floats and marching bands that promenade down Main Street during the parade.

Fans of anything on four wheels will get revved up over the Motorcycle Rally at the Shamrock Area Community Center and the Antique, Classic Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show at the Route 66 landmark U-Drop Inn.

From jigs to jams, adolescents can move feet to the beat at Area Youth Night at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center while grown ups get down at the Adult Dance, which lasts until midnight.

Irish eyes will be smiling on stage as a lineup of cute contestants participate in the Lad 'n' Lass Beauty Pageant at the Shamrock High School Auditorium. Spectators can also cheer for the winner of the Miss Irish Rose title as the beauty queen is crowned.

No festival is complete without a roster of rocking tunes. Live acts will make the kickoff banquet and the dances even more lively.

Sightseers hoping to find a souvenir of their stay in Shamrock should stroll among the vendor booths at the Arts and Crafts Show.

Austin's Batfest Moves to 1st Street Bridge

Batfest, the popular Austin festival that celebrates the city's famous bat colony, has moved this year. The festival, scheduled this upcoming weekend for Saturday from 2pm until midnight and Sunday from 2pm until 10pm, will be held on the 1st Street Bridge between Cesar Chavez and Riverside Drive.

In the past, the festival was held on Congress Avenue Bridge--now renamed the Ann Richards Bridge--which is the home of the country's largest urban bat colony. However, the traffic backup caused by the popular festival has resulted in its being moved to the next bridge over which will still provide good viewing of the 1.5 million bats when they head out at sunset.

Admission to the festival is $5 at the gate; kids 10 and under are free with an adult.

The event includes two days of live music with stages on the north and south ends of the bridge. This year's performers include Edgar Winter, Flobots, the BoDeans, and many others.

Willie's Place Set to Open This Week

The long-awaited opening of Willie's Place (as in Willie Nelson) will take place later this week in the town of Carl's Corner near Hillsboro. You might be familiar with this facility; it operated for many years as a truck stop named Carl's Corner on the southbound side of I-35. After an extensive renovation and expansion, it is now reopening as Willie's Place at Carl's Corner. It's appropriate that the reopening take place on the July 4 weekend because in its Carl's Corner days, this was the setting for several of Willie Nelson's famous picnics.

The events kicked off on June 30 with a sold out private benefit but the coming days bring several public events. On July 1 and 2, the facility's Whiskey River Saloon will be host to David Allan Coe & Ray Wylie Hubbard from 8pm to midnight.

On July 3 in the Willie's Place Theater, the day will be filled with free music. Here's the schedule at present:

10am Mike Siler
1pm Heather Myles
6pm Merle Haggard
8pm Ray Price
10pm Willie Nelson

Along with three stages, Willie's Place has a restaurant, gift shop and general store, facilities for truckers, and Willie's biodiesel fuel.

32308: Weslaco's Onion Fest is Nothing to Cry About

Everything's sweet about Weslaco's Onion Fest, the April 5 celebration of the sweet 1015 Onion. If you don't know, the 1015 Onion is one developed by Texas A&M University in the 1980s as a sweet onion that wouldn't cause tears. And why the name 1015? Because October 15 is the suggested planting date.

The annual onion fest puts this fragrant plant on center stage with a full day of mariachi music, horsemanship demonstrations, children's activities and more. For all the details on this year's event, check out our Onion Fest article.

Dallas Blooms Takes on Texas Theme

With the thermometer outside hovering just above freezing here at the TexasTripper offices, it seems like a long way until spring in Texas. Not so. Up in North Texas, bulbs patiently wait in the soil and in less than two months they will create one of the biggest floral events in the country in Dallas.

Now in its 24th year, Dallas Blooms, the Southwest's largest outdoor floral festival, always takes on an annual theme. This year the theme of the event running March 8 - April 13 is "The Star of Texas."

Look for plenty of Texas heritage at the well-attended event...plus plenty of red, white and blue blooms.

Arts & Crafts Fair: Opening weekend will include the first Southern Artisans Market, an arts and crafts fair featuring artisans from around the South. The Southern Artisans Market is a two-day only event on March 8 and 9.

Special Texas Themed Events: Other special events are planned throughout the festival including:

• Golden Cowboy living statues
• Trick Roping
• Armadillo Racing
• Little Britches Rodeo
• Texas Hero look-a-likes (including Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and Sam Houston)
• Country Western Dancing (including square dancing, line dancing and clog dancing)
• Hoe Downs
• Chili Cook Offs
• Texas Cuisine Tasting

Austin "Keeps It Weird" During the Holidays

It might seem like a while until the holidays but Austin's getting ready for over a month of special activities. In true Austin style, the city has plenty of live music and unique events that "keep Austin weird."

Nov. 14-18
The Junior League of Austin's A Christmas Affair presents "The Gift of the Magi" at the Palmer Events Center. You'll find over 200 national merchants selling original art, jewelry and crafts during the four-day holiday market. Receptions, tea parties and private shopping events also highlight the schedule. Ticket prices vary.

Nov. 18
As part of a year-long celebration of Israel's 60th anniversary as an independent state, the Jewish Community Association holds its Annual Chanukah Bazaar on Nov. 18 at the Dell JCC Community Hall. Other events continue through May 2008 in commemoration of Israeli independence.

Nov. 25-Dec. 11
Five Latino theater groups combine their creative talents to present a Latin Christmas story with La Pastorela: A Shepherd’s Story, Nov. 25-Dec. 11, at Tillery Street Theatre.

Dec. 1-2
Art aficionados celebrate the season early with Austin Museum of Art's Holiday Arts Festival, December 1-2. Guests stroll the elaborately decorated gardens of Laguna Gloria to view sculpture and art while enjoying holiday cuisine.

Nov. 30-Dec. 30
Zachary Scott Theatre presents three special shows. Plaid Tidings brings the cast of hit the musical "Forever Plaid" back to the stage, November 30-December 30, for heavenly holiday harmonies that include tributes to the Chipmunks, Ed Sullivan and the Rockettes. Hilarity ensues with David Sedaris' The Santaland Diaries, November 23- January 6. Rockin' Christmas Party puts a big hair, rock 'n roll edge on the traditional "Christmas Carol" story in this hit musical at Zach's intimate Kleberg stage at 1510 Toomey Rd., November 23-January 3.

Nov. 30-Dec. 22
Kids and parents build a candy-covered holiday tradition at the Austin Children's Museum's Gingerbread House workshops, November 30-December 22. Real gingerbread, icing, gumdrops and candy canes provide the building blocks for this fun family event. Dates and times vary; more information is available at www.austinkids.org.

December
The 37th Street Lights (pictured) twinkle throughout Central Austin during the month of December. Neighbors work together for months stringing up lights to create a funky holiday display along 37th Street from Guadalupe Street to Home Lane. The street is open to vehicular traffic. But for the full, environmentally friendly effect, it's best to park and walk.

Dec. 1
Experience a traditional German-Texan Christmas market and visit with St. Niklaus at the annual German Christmas Market in the historic German Free School at 507 E. 10th Street on Saturday, December 1. The German-Texan Heritage Society offers handmade and imported wooden and blown-glass German ornaments and other gifts. Enjoy refreshments, live music and German carols.

December
Even in Texas, it wouldn't be the holiday season without ice skating on the Whole Foods Market Ice Rink. Skaters show off their skills—or hang on to the railing—throughout the month of December. Whole Foods also offers holiday cooking classes and chef demonstrations in the Culinary Center, located at the world headquarters store at Sixth Street and Lamar Boulevard. Check the website for schedule and details.

Dec. 1
The annual State Capitol Tree Lighting and KUT Holiday Stroll takes place on December 1 from 6-7 p.m. John Aielli, host of NPR affiliate KUT's "Eklektikos," leads the audience gathered around the tree at 11th Street and Congress Avenue in traditional carols. Festivities continue along Congress Avenue with entertainment, and merchants remain open late. More information is available at www.downtownaustin.com.

December
In yet another Austin tradition, the month-long Zilker Trail of Lights begins with lighting of the soaring Zilker Christmas Tree on December 2. The pedestrian Trail of Lights, featuring live music and Santa visits, transforms a mile-long stretch of Zilker Park into a twinkling wonderland from December 9-31.

Dec. 4
Noche de Fiesta Navidena celebrates Mexican Christmas traditions with folk art, flavorful foods and seasonal music at the Mexic-Arte Museum, 419 Congress Avenue.

Dec. 8-9
The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center commemorates its 25th anniversary with Luminations: A Winter Celebration. Soft light glows from thousands of luminarias, torches and lanterns while music fills the night air. Children’s activities include storytellers and holiday crafts in the Little House. The gift shop is open for holiday shopping. Shoppers can check items off their list at the Wild Ideas gift shop.

Dec. 14-24
The Armadillo Christmas Bazaar keeps Austin weird with distinctive jewelry, fabrics, handmade goods, blown glass, paintings and prints from local and national artists. Relocated this year to the Austin Convention Center, the bazaar also features live music from some of Austin's best local musicians and food vendors.

Dec. 1-23
Choreographed by Ballet Austin Artistic Director Stephen Mills, The Nutcracker pairs classic dance with a classic performance by the Austin Symphony Orchestra of Tchaikovsky’s timeless score. Clara and friends captivate audiences with an evening of magic in the Land of Sweets. The show runs December 1-23 at the Paramount Theatre.

Dec. 4
Austin Symphony teams up with Chorus Austin to ring in the season with the masterpiece Handel's Messiah. Riverbend Center provides a traditional Hill Country setting for the concert.

Dec. 11
At Riverbend Centre, Austin Symphony invites families and friends to sing holiday favorites with a full orchestra during its annual Christmas Sing-a-long. The event is free, but tickets are still required to join in the fun.

Dec. 22, 29
Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum presents Musical Favorites in the Dog Trot Cabin, December 22 and 29. Local musicians perform toe-tapping Texas fiddle music on the porch of a dog trot cabin in the first floor exhibit gallery.

Dec. 31
The humor of the holidays is perhaps best captured by Esther's Follies Christmas and New Year's shows. The over-the-top Christmas Show features Esther's classics as well as holiday specials and magic tricks by Ray Anderson, dubbed the best magician in the Southwest. The New Year's Eve performance also includes a full buffet with a champagne toast at midnight. Esther's Follies is located at 525 E. Sixth St. Check the website for dates and details.

Dec. 31
New Year's Eve invites families to come downtown and welcome 2008 with First Night Austin. This alcohol-free festival encourages "out with the old, and in with the new," with art, ritual and festivity. The city's plazas, storefronts and parks serve as a background for dance, music, film/video, poetry and visual art.

Jan. 8-13
The merriment keeps on going with Joe Sears, Jaston Williams and their zany cast of much-loved characters from Tuna, Texas when they present A Tuna Christmas at the Paramount Theatre.

Upcoming Texas Cattle Drives

There must be something about the approaching cooler weather and cattle drives...we've got word of two upcoming cattle drives that both sound fun!

Big Bend State Park Cattle Drive

In West Texas, Big Bend Ranch State Park will be hosting the park's fall cattle drive from October 4 through 6. They invite guests to participate and see cattle in the ranch's rugged and remote cattle pastures, learn how the herd is moved with horses and drive the park's historic Texas Longhorn Herd to stock pens at the ranch headquarters. Participants can take part in branding and vaccinating calves, recording lineages and experiencing the traditions of the Spanish, Mexican and Anglo-American cowboy culture.

The longhorn cattle drive program is Big Bend Ranch State Park's most popular event, allowing up to 25 visitors to participate and experience a part of the state's Western heritage. The three-day event allows one to experience life as a cowboy and gain a lifetime of memories. Guests have come from as far away as New York, Australia, Canada and England.

"If you're looking for a genuine taste of the wild, western range life, the Big Bend Ranch cattle drive is about as real as it gets," Colorado travel writer Christine Loomis said of her recent cattle drive experience in the vast and beautiful high country of the Chihuahuan Desert.

Cowhands end their days with a chuck wagon meal served on range, listening to cowboy music and poetry to make the outing an authentic and memorable experience. Participants can choose to sleep on the range or return to the ranch bunkhouse for the night.

The cost of the three-day event is $975, which includes horse and tack, park entry fee, lodging/camping fees, meals and the assistance of park wrangler guides. Big Bend Ranch is located northeast of Presidio off Texas Highway 170.

To find out more or to reserve a spot on the cattle drive, call Big Bend Ranch State Park at (432) 229-3416 or the Sauceda Ranch Headquarters at (432) 358-4444. Also, visit the park website for more information.

Georgetown Cattle Drive

If you'd like something a little more leisurely, Georgetown is hosting the Up the Chisholm Trail Event and Chuckwagon Cook-off on September 29. Along with the cattle drive, you'll find a cookoff and plenty of other family fun. For more information, see our article in the festival section.

Texas Parks & Wildlife Expo Set for October

Outdoor lovers can't miss the Texas Parks and Wildlife Expo, the country's largest free, family-oriented festival of the outdoors. This year's event is scheduled for October 6-7 at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department headquarters in Austin. Now in its 16th year, this event draws over 35,000 visitors.

“Texas Parks and Wildlife Expo is like the world’s fair for the great outdoors,” said Ernie Gammage with TPWD’s Urban Outdoors Program. “If you’ve never tried these activities, it’s a great chance to see and do it all in a safe setting with expert guidance. In everything, you’ll find a message of stewardship, the idea that we all have role to play in the conservation of the natural world.”

Activities: One new offering this year is the Personal Watercraft Simulator, an interactive and educational device which employs technology similar to arcade video games. Visitors will strap on a life jacket, climb on, rev 'er up and head out on the water, threading obstacles as they zip along the coastline. It’s fun and challenging, and participants will learn a thing or two about boating rules and water safety.

Country rock music star Kevin Fowler comes to Expo for the first time this year, signing autographed posters in the popular Wet Zone kayaking area on Sunday. Kevin is the new celebrity spokesperson for the Nobody’s Waterproof™ boating safety initiative.

Experienced boaters and anglers can take part in the Anglers’ Legacy program at the Expo for the first time this year. Launched in 2006 by the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF), this program encourages avid anglers to share their passion by visiting AnglersLegacy.org. There participants are asked to "Take the Pledge" and promise to take one new person fishing each year. In its first year, the program garnered nearly 10,000 pledges.

Another new activity at the Expo is geocaching. After a brief orientation, participants will be loaned Global Positioning Systems (GPS) units and will head out on the grounds to find cached items. This increasingly popular activity comes to Expo courtesy of Central Texas Geocachers.

For Spanish-speaking visitors, a new series of Outdoors 101 brochures translated into Spanish will be available at the International Pavilion, ones covering topics such as how to get started in freshwater fishing, saltwater fishing, camping and hunting.

Longtime favorite activities such as the Birds of Prey Show will draw crowds noon and 3 p.m. daily in the Birds of Prey Arena. SeaWorld’s Chris Bellows will also bring the popular “Amazing Animals” show to the Main Tent twice a day, with shows at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Kids' Activities: For kids, the Casting Kids activity in the Fishing and Aquatic area invites young people ages 7-to-14 to test their flipping, pitching and casting skills, learn about fishing, conservation and protection of the great outdoors and win prizes. Participants will also have a chance at competing for a quarter of a million dollars in scholarships and prizes to be given away nationwide.

Price: All events on Saturday and Sunday are free, as are water and air-conditioned shuttle bus service and parking. Although food may be brought in, coolers are discouraged because of the long walk to the grounds. Special shuttles on site will serve people with disabilities. Sorry, no pets allowed.

Parking and Shuttle: There is limited free parking near the grounds, but the best way to get to the Expo is to catch a free shuttle bus at Highland Mall (Macy’s side) near I-35 and Highway 290. If rain shuts down on-site parking, all visitors must catch shuttle buses, which run from 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. daily.

About the Buffalo Soldiers: The Buffalo Soldiers were African-Americans of the U.S. Army's 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments. In Texas, their contributions were especially significant during the Indian Wars of the late 1800s, when approximately 20% of the U.S. Cavalry involved was African-American. It is speculated that that these soldiers' curly hair resembled that of the American Indians' sacred buffalo mane, while their bravery and tenaciousness reflected the buffalo's spirit, hence inspiring the Native Americans to call them "Buffalo Soldiers."
