The Comfort Common, Comfort, Texas

They don't tear down many buildings in Comfort. Since the late-19th century, when the business district was erected, only the livery stable has been razed, making the downtown area of this Hill Country city the best preserved in the state.

At the heart of the business district is the Comfort Common, called the Ingenhuett-Faust Hotel when it was built in 1880.

The two-story limestone structure, its wide porch and balcony stretching across the building and fronted by wood posts, was designed as an eight-room facility; eight more rooms were added before the turn of the century.

The hotel had been in decline for several decades when it was purchased in 1985 by Bob and Diane Potter, who used the property as an antiques shop. Current owners and hosts Jim Lord and Bobby Dent converted the complex to a B&B and oversee the 13 antiques dealers on the premises, maintaining the place with enthusiasm.

Each of the guest rooms, along with the small cottages behind the hotel, is decorated with authentic antiques, in themes ranging from handcrafted Early American to lacy Victorian to cowboy kitsch.

Location: 717 High St., Comfort
