Corsicana, Texas Travel Guide

Established in 1849, Corsicana's population boomed with the discovery of oil here near the turn of the century. Today Corsicana primarily serves as a retail hub for the surrounding farmland

Attractions:

Collin Street Bakery. Corsicana is best known in Texas as the home of fruit cakes, baked at this operation since 1896.

Lefty Frizzell Country Music Museum. Local musician Lefty Frizzell is honored at this museum filled with country music memorabilia. Located at 912 W. Park Ave. in Pioneer Village.

Navarro College. This college is home to the Cook Planetarium, a domed planetarium that features star shows as well as laser and movie presentations. Navarro College is also home to the Pearce Collections which examines the Civil War and the Westward Expansion movement.

Navarro Mills Lake. Operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers, this lake includes public beaches and facilities for year around recreation. From Corsicana, located 20 miles southwest on TX 31, then 1 mile north on FM 667.

Festivals

April: Derrick Days This annual event celebrates the oil history of Corsicana, the home of the first commercial oil well drilled west of the Mississippi. During the event, look for an arts and crafts show, a chili cookoff, parade, live music, rodeo, and the Derrick Derby, a combination obstacle course and relay race involving all types of vehicles.

Where to Eat

Old Mexican Inn and Cantina. This restaurant has been a Corsicana favorite since it opened in 1941. Try the Mexican Inn Platter (one cheese enchilada, one tamale, one beef taco, beans, and queso). 2407 W. 7th Ave. (Closed Mondays.)

Where to Stay

Wicklow Inn. Named for the Irish ancestral province of the O'Toole clan (bearers of the name own the inn), this Victorian B&B was constructed in the 1890s. It's built of California redwood and has a French walnut staircase and leaded glass windows. The spacious front porch has an inviting swing and rocking chairs. Along with the five rooms in the B&B, there's also a carriage house. 220 North 14th Street.
