Coupland, Texas Travel Guide
Located eight miles north of Elgin on TX 95, this small community is home to about 600 families. It's a quiet agricultural community although on weekends many Austinites like to visit for a few hours of country and western fun at the local dance hall.
Attraction
Huntington Sculpture Foundation. With its miles of surrounding agricultural land, the last thing you might expect to see in tiny Coupland is a sculpture garden featuring an internationally-known artist, but that's just what this studio features. This garden and studio features the work of Jim Huntington, whose work is seen from Japan to Australia. Call for hours at the studio although the large granite sculptures can be seen outdoors anytime. Located at 212 N. Broad Street at the corner of Hoxie Street www.huntingtonsculpture.org.
Restaurant, B&B
The Old Coupland Inn and Dancehall. Barbecue and steaks take center stage when it comes to dining at this historic dancehall. We like to start with a half rack of ribs or some stuffed jalapeños then move on to the serious entrees: mesquite trimmed sirloin steaks, catfish and shrimp, a mixed barbecue plate, or chicken fried steak. Work off that big dinner with a twirl around the dance floor on Friday and Saturday nights when country bands keep the evenings lively.
If you’re planning a late night of dancing, consider a night in the adjacent B&B located just above the dance hall; it’s styled like a 1900s bordello. While it may not have ever served as a bordello, this property does have a rich history, dating back to 1910 and a life as a mercantile and even a newsletter publishing company. Open for dinner Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Located at 101-103 Hoxie Street www.couplanddancehall.com
