Ciudad Acuña, Mexico

This no-hassle border community is perfect for a weekend of shopping and fun. To reach the international border and Ciudad Acuña, follow Gibbs Street (Spur 239) west for three miles.

Most travelers drive to the Texas side of the International Bridge and pay a small fee for secured parking. From there, you can take a cab across the river, hop aboard one of the international buses, or walk across the toll bridge. Ciudad Acuña is a shopper's delight, especially along Hidalgo Street.

There is no central market here, but the shops are continuous for several blocks as you enter town. Some of the best buys are silver jewelry, blankets, leather goods, Mexican liquor, and beautifully embroidered Mexican dresses; you'll also find excellent Mexican restaurants in this community. Don’t miss Indio Boots with a huge selection of western boots in various leathers and hides.

If the historical sights and shopping have whetted your appetite, you'll find plenty of restaurants in the region. One of the best known is Crosbys. The menu features Tex-Mex food, steaks, seafood, and fish from nearby Lake Amistad.

Other popular stops include La Macarena Restaurant Bar, built in 1942, Amigo's Pub, serving Mexican dishes and seafood, and Panchos, both a bar and an expansive shop.

For nightlife fun, The Corona Club features both country and rock music and visitors can dance the night away on the outdoor patio. And don’t be surprised if the club looks familiar; you might just recognize it as the set for Robert Rodriquez's El Mariachi and Desperado movies.
