Denison, Texas Travel Guide

Named for Vice President George Denison, this community has undergone an extensive historic restoration thanks to the Texas Main Street program.  Along with the town's historic structures, Denison is also the gateway to two state parks.

Attractions

Denison Dam. This dam contains the waters of lake Texoma. An interpretive center here houses fossils found during the construction. Located on Rt. 91, three miles north of Denison.

Eisenhower Birthplace State Historical Park. Operated by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, this frame house has been restored to its appearance at the time of the former president's birth in 1890. Located at 208 East Day Street.

Eisenhower State Park. This park offers swimming, fishing and camping on Lake Texoma. Located at 50 Park Rd. 20.

Grayson County Frontier Village. This collection of historic structures dates from 1840 to 1900. You can have a look at a log schoolhouse, a jail, and period homes with typical furnishings. Located at the Loy Lake Exit off Rt. 75.

Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge. This waterfowl refuge located on Lake Texoma is a favorite spot with birders who come to identify some of the 300 species that have been spotted here. The visitors center has interpretive displays and bird lists, and self-guided driving tours are possible. Located on Rt. 1417.
