Region: South Texas Plains

Drive south on I-35 for 17 miles to the community of Dilley, also known for its agriculture. Although peanuts are also grown in this region, here watermelons are king. Dilley's economy also has benefited from another benefactor: oil.

Many visitors have another reason to visit this community of just 3,000 residents. With over 250 species spotted, Dilley is known for its birding.

Watermelon Statue. Truly a Texas-sized watermelon, this statue is Dilley's favorite photo spot. The statue is located in City Park which includes picnic tables. Open daily; free. Location: City Park on Main St.
