Huntsville, Texas Travel Guide

This East Texas community began as a trading post. Surrounded by tall forests, the ctiy is a gateway to Sam Houston National Forest, named for Huntsville's most famous resident.

The city is also home to the world's tallest statue of an American hero: a 77-foot remembrance of Sam Houston located at the Sam Houston State University.

Huntsville is best known among Texans as the home of the state prison system.

Sam Houston National Forest.This piney woods forest offers hiking trails and picnic sites.

Texas Prison Museum. Complete with a vintage electric chair, this historic prison exhibits a number of items. Prisoner-produced goods are also on display. Location: 1113 12th St., opposite courthouse.
