Named for an American Revolutionary hero, the community of Jasper is a stepping stone to the area's beautiful forests.

Angelina National Forest lies nearby and Big Thicket National Preserve is also in the region. Here pines and hardwoods shade the landscape, which is broken up by rolling hills.

Attractions

Angelina National Forest. Camping, hiking, fishing, pinicking. From Jasper, 13 mi northwest on Rte. 63.

Beaty-Orton House. This historic home, open to the public, boasts Victorian architecture. 200 S. Main.

Martin Dies, Jr., State Park. Camping, screened shelters, boating and boat rentals, a playground, and fishing are available here. There's also a nature center and walking trails.

Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Also located in Martin Dies Jr. State Park, the Sam Rayburn reservoir. Headquarters located 9 mi north on U.S. 96, then 8 mi west on Rte. 255;is used for fishing, boating, swimming, and camping. From Jasper, 13 mi southwest on U.S. 190 to Park Rd. 48, on east shore of B.A. Steinhagen Lake.

Toledo Bend Dam and Reservoir. Headquarters located 9 mi north on U.S. 96, then 26 mi east on Rte. 255.

Sabine River Lake. This lake covers areas in both Texas and Louisiana. Spanning 181,600 acres, it offers 650 miles of shoreline.

B.A. Steinhagen Lake. Headquarters located 15 mi southwest on U.S. 190, then 5 mi south on FM 9

Sabine National Forest.The several recreation areas here include the 27-mile Trail Between the Lakes, which spans the area between Toledo Bend Reservoir and Lake Sam Rayburn. From Jasper, north and east via U.S. 96.
