The House of the Seasons, Jefferson, Texas

One of East Texas's most intriguing architectural specimens, this 1872 house exemplifies the transitional period between Greek Revival and Victorian styles, with Italianate touches all its own. The most dazzling feature is the large dome that juts from the roof; the cupola's interior walls feature sunlit frescoes representing the four seasons, which can be viewed from the first floor.

The guest rooms are in a re-created carriage house on the estate, but visitors are welcome in the main house, where owners Kirby and Cindy Childress live. Breakfast is served in the antique-laden dining room. The public pays for tours of the house, but the Childresses enjoy taking their B&B guests around at night and allowing them to climb into the cupola.

The exquisite 1870s period suites in the Carriage House are dominated by huge beds stacked with soft linens; all have baths with stained-glass windows. Personalized touches include a spinning wheel in one room and an antique pump organ in another.

Location: 409 S. Alley St
