Kilgore, Texas Travel Guide

Best known as the home of the Kilgore Rangerettes, the first precision drill team, Kilgore began as a railroad town in 1872. The city boomed in the 30s with the discovery of oil and soon over 1200 oil fields dotted the community.

Reminders of the oil field heritage are still found in the community, from a museum to oil derricks that still pump the precious resource.

Attractions:

East Texas Oil Museum at Kilgore College. This museum covers the boomtown era of East Texas with displays on drilling rigs, films on oil field life, and geological exhibits with a simulated elevator ride down into oil formations beneath the earth. Located on the Kilgore College campus at the junction of U.S. 259 and Ross St.

Rangerette Showcase. This museum features memorabilia about Kilgore College's drill team, the first team of its kind. Located at 1100 Broadway.

Shakespeare's Garden. This interesting gardenf eatures flora native to William Shakespeare's England. All plants found in the garden are mentioned in one of the Bard's plays. Located on US 259 at Brook Drive.
