Lufkin, Texas Travel Guide This East Texas community is surrounded by pine forests. Vacationers will find that Lufkin, a capital of the lumber industry, is a good access point to the Sam Rayburn Reservoir, the largest lake in Texas, as well as the Angelina and Davy Crockett national forests. Attractions: Angelina National Forest. The Lufkin area is home to some of the region's best forests, tall stands of trees known as the piney woods. Angelina National Forest includes Bouton Lake, Boykin Springs, Sandy Creek, and the Caney Creek recreation areas. It also offers the 5.5-mile Sawmill Hiking Trail. Located off Highway 63. Davy Crockett Park. The Lufkin area is home to some of the region's best forests, tall stands of trees known as the piney woods. The large Davy Crockett Park includes the Big Slough Canoe Trail and Wilderness Area, the 4-C's Hiking Trail with its 19 miles of marked trail, and several other recreation areas. Ellen Trout Park Zoo. Exotic species here include several in breeding programs such as the West African crowned crane, the Louisiana pine snake, and others. Located two miles north of Lufkin at Loop 287 North at Martin Luther King Drive. Museum of East Texas. Local history displays as well as local artwork are all housed in an historic 1905 Episcopal Church. Located at 503 N. Second St. Texas Forestry Museum.
