Famous Texans: Janis Joplin

History records a turbulent, yet strong, relationship between the rebellious rock star and her hometown, and although Janis Joplin escaped what she considered the slow suffocation of coastal living, the community of Port Arthur continued to tug at the singer's heart strings throughout her rise to superstar status.

Today, fans of the '60's icon can stroll among an assemblage of Janis Joplin memorabilia at the Museum of the Gulf Coast (700 Procter Street), or make a pilgrimage to 4330 32nd St., where the singer spent her formative years.

In recognition of her legendary allure, the Port Arthur Historical Society placed a Texas State Historical Marker outside the home on January 19, 2007.
