Central Texas State Fair
Belton, Texas

When: late August, early September

Where: Bell County Expo Center in Belton

Listen closely and you can still hear the faint echo of hoofbeats from the cattle that were herded along the Belton section of the Chisholm Trail by rugged wranglers back in the 1800's. Over a century later, that independent cowboy spirit is still alive and well and on display in the central Texas community as residents gather to say so long to summer with a decidedly western flair.

Attractions: Hang on for a demolition competition as the participants of the Texas State Championship "Automobile Destruction Derby" rev up their engines and set out to smash up every auto in the arena, then get ready to rumble in a Monster Truck as a racing team gives you the chance to get behind the wheel. For demonstrations of daring do, check out a high-flying, freestyle skateboard stunt show.

The true highlight of any Texas fair, however, is the rodeo, and Belton offers some of the best professional bull-riding around during a two-day blowout held at the Bell County Expo Center. If you're inspired by feats of bronc busting in the arena, test your own cowboy skills later at the fair's mechanical bull.

Children's Activities: Kids can cuddle the cute critters at the petting zoo, while athletic adolescents can conquer the summit of a rock-climbing wall. Rides for all ages can be found at the Reed Exposition Midway Carnival, and entertainers ranging from jugglers to a hypnotist will keep the entire family enthralled.
