Dayton Ole Tyme Festival Take a sentimental journey to the Southeast
Texas town of Dayton, which has celebrated the innocent joys of
yesteryear since 1992 with an annual festival. Historical re-enactors
dressed as Southern belles and Civil War soldiers let a crowd of
20,000 meander down memory lane as they enjoy three days of family-friendly
activities. Competitions: From
cop cars to Cadillacs, a variety of vintage vehicles are on display
in the classic car and TX4x4 competition, which also pits four-wheel
drives against each other in several categories, including people's
choice, hard luck 4x4, muddies 4x4, best trail big jeep and big
truck. A staple of country life, the familiar green
John Deere and fire engine red Farmall tractors take the spotlight
in a tractor show, with trophies awarded for people's choice, originality,
and the slowest farming vehicle. The culinary creativity of weekend chefs are put to the test at the barbecue cook-off, where the public can sample succulent brisket, pork ribs, chicken and fajitas before trophies are awarded for the best in each category. Children's activities: Kids
can pose for a photo with their favorite new furry friend at the
petting zoo, or giddyup on a wooden horse aboard a carousel, just
one of the child-friendly rides at the carnival. Budding Emeril
Lagasse's from age five through eighteen can show off their culinary
skills in the junior division of the Chili Championship, while each
tiny Dayton darling ages six and under will be rewarded for their
stroll across the stage at the Lil' Mister and Lil' Miss pageant. For more information: visit www.oletymefestival.com |
