Harper Frontier Days
Harper, Texas
When: late August
Where: Harper Community Park in Harper, Texas
An unassuming Hill Country haven, the 1,000 residents of Harper are accustomed to the sight of drivers cruising past their placid town on their quest for antiques in nearby Fredericksburg. However, each August cars will cluster in the small Gillespie County community as the town enjoys a day-long celebration of old-fashioned family values during Harper Frontier Days, a tradition since 1964.
Competitions: The fun of a free kids' fishing tournament will reel in younger festival attendees, while both the young and the young at heart can duel for domination in a domino "42" tournament or washer pitching contest (both of which require an entrance fee.)
Events: Topping off an afternoon of activities, the beat of a drum and blare of a trumpet call out the arrival of a marching band, paving the way for a parade procession. After watching the baton twirlers and floats file down the road, enjoy a plate piled with BBQ before cheering on the participants in the wild steer saddling contest and the calf scramble during the Lester Meier rodeo. Finally, kick up your heels in celebration of the day-long event during a street dance which lasts until the wee hours.
