Texas Festivals: January
International Sister Cities Festival, Laredo Photo courtesy Laredo CVB January is always a slow month for Texas festivals; after the excitement of the holidays, the year generally gets off to a slow start. This month also presents the biggest weather worry in terms of icy roads, especially for the northern portion of the state. 2008 Festival Dates: • always doublecheck festival dates when planning your trip! Jan. 1, 2008: AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic, Dallas. Held at Fair Park, this annual bowl game is one of Texas's biggest and oldest. Jan. 11-Feb. 3, 2008: Southwestern Exposition Livestock Show & Rodeo, Fort Worth. Since 1896, this rodeo and stock show has been one of Texas's largest. Jan. 12, 2008: Winterfest, Pearland. Over 200,000 pounds of snow turns this Houston area festival into a winter wonderland! Jan. 19, 2008: Gulf Coast Hall of Fame Show, Port Arthur. The event which began as a celebration of Janis Joplin's birthday has expanded to include many types of music. Jan. 21, 2008: Martin Luther King Jr. March and Rally, San Antonio. The march, the largest of its kind in the U.S., is the culmination of a month-long tribute to the fallen civil rights hero. Jan. 23-Feb. 24, 2008: George Washington's Birthday Celebration, Laredo/Nuevo Laredo. Almost a month of parades, parties, concerts, and pageants mark the country's largest celebration of George Washington's Birthday. Jan. 25, 2008: Cowboy Breakfast, San Antonio. Called the world's largest breakfast, this free event expects to feed 30,000 a cowboy style breakfast. Jan. 25-27, 2008: International Sister Cities Festival, Laredo. This festival celebrates business, trade, tourism, arts and culture found in Laredo's Sister cities. Jan. 25-Feb. 5, 2008: Mardi Gras Galveston, Galveston. Falling early this year, Mardi Gras brings two weekends of parades, parties, and more. Jan. 31-Feb. 3, 2008: Southeast Texas Mardi Gras Weekend, Port Arthur. Parades, live entertainment, carnival rides, and a special kids' zone are highlights at this family-friendly event. Jan. 31-Feb. 17, 2008: San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. Some of country music's biggest names appear at this event which includes a rodeo, livestock show, horse show, art show, and more. 2009 Start of Texas Legislature, second Tuesday of January (odd numbered years only) back to Festivals Index
