There's a forecast calling for snow--200,000 pounds of it--in Pearland this January thanks to the annual Winterfest. Hosted by the Pearland Parks and Recreation Department, visitors and residents of this Houston-area town can enjoy all the pleasures of a winter carnival, at least for one day.
The focal point of the event is the snow tubing hill, tempting visitors young and old to shush down the snowy dome. There are also plenty of thrills on the carnival rides or try your ice skating skills on the outdoor rink.
Other activities include three petting zoos, three camel rides, 10 pony rides, crocodile encounters, dancing horse demonstrations, gold panning, a climbing wall, and performances by a magician and illusionist.
One of the most unique events of the day is the recycled snowman contest, one awarding prizes for the best use of recyclables, best winter theme, and best overall snowman.
There is an admission charge for the event (and an entry fee for the snowman contest.)
