Dawn at the Alamo
San Antonio, Texas

When: March 6 of every year

Where: Alamo

Known for: reenactment of the battle of the Alamo on March 6

Members of the San Antonio Living History Association are joined by re-enactors from across the country to portray the armies of the Texian defenders and the Mexican soldiers led by General Santa Anna. The event occurs on March 6, the anniversary of the fall of the Alamo, starting at 6am like the historic predawn raid on the Alamo.

The event is also remembered with quiet solemnity. Thirteen candles are lit to symbolize the 13-day siege of the Alamo; other solemn remembrances include a reconciliation peace prayer and laying of commemorative wreaths.

Sponsored by the San Antonio Living History Association, the event also includes a flintlock musket volley, with the sounds of the gunfire echoing against the historic walls of the shine as well as the reading of eyewitness accounts of the bloody battle. A reconciliation peace prayer is read in both English and Spanish.

We’ve attended this event and you must get up early for this reenactment; the one-hour event takes place the hour before dawn. It is an excellent way to get a feel for the historic importance of this iconic monument.
