Martin Luther King Jr. March and Rally
When: The march takes place annually on the third Monday in January. Where: The march begins at Freedom Bridge and concludes at Pittman-Sullivan Park in San Antonio. "Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase." The stirring words of one of the nation's most eloquent orateurs, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who helped the nation take strides toward racial equality, reverberates in the hearts and minds of a crowd 100,000 strong each third Monday in January as people from all walks of like gather at Freedom Bridge for a three-mile march in honor of the civil rights leader. Since 1986, the rumble of a garbage truck, used in recognition of the late activist's final peaceful procession in support of sanitation workers back in 1968, heralds the beginning of a trek through the streets of the Alamo City which leads the congregation to Pittman-Sullivan Park, where San Antonio companies are set up for an annual job fair. The march, the largest of its kind in the U.S., is the culmination of a month-long tribute to the fallen civil rights hero. Art exhibitions, award presentations, music concerts, church services and a wreath-laying ceremony at MLK Plaza are held each year to guarantee that Dr. King's dream lives on.
