Tejano Conjunto Festival
San Antonio, Texas
When: early to mid-May
Where: Rosedale Park in
San Antonio
As its name implies, conjunto is a harmonious marriage
of musical styles, blending the lively "oompah" beat provided
by the button accordion, an instrument dear to the hearts of European
immigrants, with the romantic rhythms of the Spanish bajo sexto
guitar to create a south-of-the-border sound that has become an
integral part of a proud Hispanic heritage.
Since 1981, the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, America's
largest community-based, multi- disciplinary organization, has celebrated
this musical union with a fun-filled fiesta where a crowd of 40,000
can "baila" to the beat of conjunto classics and chart-topping
Tejano tunes.
Tex-Mex cuisine will be available to tempt the tastebuds
of festival attendees as they party in the park, and a Conjunto
Hall of Fame induction ceremony will provide a musical crescendo
to the three-day event.
