Flatonia, Texas Travel Guide Region: Prairies and Lakes
This community was settled by English, German, Bohemian and Czech immigrants, many of whom came to the country in the 1850s and 1860s to avoid Austro-Hungarian oppression. Today the town is a quiet farming and ranching community located on busy I-10. Attractions E.A. Arnim Archives and Museum. This local history museum contains exhibits on Flatonia's early days and its settlement by many cultural groups. Open Thursday and Friday afternoons. Festivals October: Czhilispiel. When tiny Flatonia needed a doctor years ago, local citizens decided to send a hometown girl to medical school. To fund her education, they began this chili cookoff (now the second largest in Texas) and festival held in late October. There's lots of music, a quilt show, "the world's largest tented biergarten," and a barbecue cookoff as well. Market Days: Flatonia also hosts Market Days once per quarter, featuring local merchants and artisans. Markets are held in March, June, September and a special Christmas market in early December.
