Das Kleine Nest, Fredericksburg, Texas

In a fitting testament to this "Little Nest's" charm as a honeymoon retreat, owners Pat and Toni Keating constructed a chapel on the premises. But there's a certain irony to this act: The limestone cottage was built in 1875 by a bachelor for his betrothed---just before their nuptials were called off.

As the German name suggests, Das Kleine Nest is a tiny place, a two-room cabin with a spiral staircase that leads to a bedroom loft. The loft has barely enough room for the queen-size bed it supports; below, the doll-house-size kitchen spills into the living room.

But for those who don't mind their surroundings cozy---or who prefer them that way---this snugly fits the bill. The house mixes antiques and contemporary furnishings, including colorful Mexican-tile floors and hand-loomed rugs. An enclosed patio at the back door and a larger patio area in the yard are fine for lounging with a good book.

Booking Location: 231 W. Main St., Fredericksburg
