Luckenbach, Texas
Waylon Jennings's popular country-western song made this community a Texas institution. The town consists of a shop or two and a small general store that since 1849 has served as a general gathering place, not to mention post office and store. Today the walls of that old store are covered with scrawled names penned by Luckenbach fans. The store sells souvenirs of the town daily. This town was founded in 1852 by Jacob, William, and August Luckenbach. The brothers opened a post office at the site and called it South Grape Creek. In 1886 a man named August Engel reopened the post office and renamed it Luckenbach in honor of the early founders. Just steps from the general store, you'll find the
Luckenbach Dancehall, which serves as a popular live music venue
and is also rented out for weddings and special occasions. Directions to Luckenbach: To reach Luckenbach from Austin, take US 290 toward Fredericksburg; turn left (south) on RR1376 and continue for about 4-1/4 miles. Continue south for 4.6 miles then turn right (west) on Luckenbach Town Loop just before the South Grape Creek Bridge. From San Antonio, take I-10 north to Boerne and take exit 537. Stay on the exit road to the right toward Boerne for one mile (TX South 87). Turn north (left) on RR1376 and continue 27 miles. Take a left just past the South Grape Creek Bridge onto Luckenbach Town Loop. Don't expect to see signs pointing to the turnoff
for Luckenbach Road; they are stolen as fast as the Highway Department
can get them in the ground. For more information: visit www.luckenbachtexas.com/ Return to Fredericksburg Travel Guide
