The Nagel House,
Fredericksburg
In 1907, this two-story house was built
by 14 men in 11 days. When its current owners, retired minister
Charlie Tatum and his wife, Joan, restored the deteriorating homestead
in 1986, the process was considerably more time-consuming. The effort
paid off, however; the Nagel House is one of the prettier Victorian
guest homes in Fredericksburg.
Smooth pastels and lace curtains lend
a soft touch to the period light fixtures and antiques in each room.
The downstairs guest room is formal and elegant; its bathroom includes
an etched-glass window, claw-foot tub, and pedestal sink. The two
upstairs bedrooms have an English country flavor.
The kitchen is stocked with food for
guests to prepare, including sausage rolls, ham, and muffins. Depending
on your mood, breakfast can be a dressy affair in the dining room,
complete with fine china and crystal, or a casual nosh in the breakfast
area, with its country decor and brightly colored stoneware.
