Oktoberfest, Fredericksburg The fun starts in early October with Oktoberfest, three days of fun that recall the German roots which make Fredericksburg unique. For over two decades, this event, held at the downtown Market Square, traces its roots back to a royal wedding celebration in Germany in 1810. Today the Old World traditions live on at this event with the friendly spirit of "Gemütlichkeit", German music, dances, arts and crafts, and more. The event features over 50 artisans as well, so holiday
shoppers looking to get an early start will find unique items, from
pottery to jewelry to woodwork. "This is a family event," notes David McClure, president of the Pedernales Creative Arts Society. "We want people of all ages there--seniors, the kids, everyone--all having a good time." Children can race remote-controlled cars at Kinderpark, have their faces painted, or burn off some extra energy in the jumping castle. Over 25 bands mean plenty of chances to polka, and
food booths serve traditional favorites ranging from wurst and kraut
to schnitzels and strudel. For more information on Oktoberfest, call 830-997-4810 or toll-free 866-TEX-FEST (839-3378). Return to Fredericksburg Travel Guide
