Region: Gulf Coast

Many cities offer fine dining, cultural events, and historical
attractions. And beachside communities typically boast sun, sand and surf.
But Galveston is a marriage of the best of both worlds:
city culture and seaside resort. This island paradise joins together fine
dining, historical attractions, and cultural events normally found in
the big city, with the swimming and sunbathing of a beachside playground.
Galveston has weathered more than one hurricane, but the
1900 hurricane was by far the most devastating. Over 6000 residents were
killed by the storm, and many structures were demolished. This hurricane
prompted city officials to begin work actually raising the island and
adding a seawall, making Galveston today a safe place to visit.
The historical district of the city is The Strand,
filled with specialty shops, outdoor dining, and around the clock excitement.
