Baytown, Texas


Located on the mouth of the San Jacinto River, this community began as a store and a sawmill. In 1822 Lynchburg Ferry was established to convey passengers and goods across the waterway.

Today the town is active in the petrochemical and oil refining industries and offers tourists plenty of watersports fun ranging from sportsfishing to sailing.

Attractions:

Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge. A favorite with birders, this coastal refuge of over 30,000 acres is filled with waterfowl, migrant birds, alligators, and more. To reach the park, take Route 61 to Route 562 to Route 1985.

Lynchburg Ferry. When Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna's army in 1836, the Lynchburg ferry carried wounded soldiers back across the San Jacinto River into Lynchburg. Located at 1001 Lynchburg Road.
