San Jacinto Battlefield
State Historical Park Growing up in Texas, this park was the stuff of legend. Here the Battle of San Jacinto was fought, winning Texas its freedom from Mexico. Located in the community of Deer Park near Houston, this site was the location of the battle between the Texas patriots and the Mexican army of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna in 1836. This fateful battle won Texas its independence from Mexico. The park is administered by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Here a 570-foot obelisk commemorates the victory of the 1836 Battle of San Jacinto, marking the end of the Texas Revolution against Mexico. The obelisk is covered with fossilized Texas Cordova shellstone and is currently under renovation. An elevator takes visitors to the top of the monument for a view of the park as well as the Houston Ship Channel and the surrounding petrochemical industries. At the base of the monument stands the San Jacinto Museum of History, dedicated to the preservation of the history of the early days of Texas. Although some of its exhibits are dated and old-fashioned, the museum does have an extensive collection on the Texas Revolution, the Republic of Texas and early days of statehood. Most of the museum's extensive collection of documents and art centers around 18th and 19th centuries, especially the years Texas served as a colony of Mexico, battle for independence, and the Republic of Texas era. The museum also shows Texas Forever! The Battle of San Jacinto, a multi-media show about the struggle for independence and the fateful battle. Located 21 miles east of downtown Houston on TX 225 East to TX 134, turn north to park. For More Information: visit www.sanjacinto-museum.org or www.tpwd.state.tx.us/park/.
