May Means Festivals in Kerrville, Texas

May means a month of festivals in nearby Kerrville. From Boerne, continue north on I-10 then turn west on TX 27 for the final 19 miles.

Two of the state’s best-known and loved festivals are held in Kerrville and draw visitors from throughout the region.

Texas State Arts and Crafts Fair

The official Texas State Arts and Crafts Fair, now in its 31rd decade, is always scheduled for late May on the campus of Schreiner University.

This fair draws over 200 artists from across the state and features only unique items. No manufactured, mass produced, or molded items are permitted, and all the artisans must reside in Texas to participate. The festival includes plenty of shopping opportunities as well as crafts demonstrations and fun areas for the kids to try out their creative skills.

Kerrville Folk Festival

May also brings plenty of toe-tapping fun to the hills of Kerrville thanks to the Kerrville Folk Festival, scheduled for late May and early June. Since 1972 this celebration of song has featured over 100 songwriters and their bands from Texas as well as numerous other states. One of Texas's best loved music gatherings, this music extravaganza is held nine miles south of town at the Quiet Valley Ranch. Campers are welcome to pitch their tents (or bring an RV) to extend their stay.

Even if you can’t make it to Kerrville for one of its Texas-sized festivals, you’ll still find plenty of reasons to plan a visit. Year-around the arts thrive in this community which is home to many internationally recognized artists. For a look at world-class Western art, make a visit to the Cowboy Artists of America Museum. This hilltop museum features work by members of the Cowboy Artists of America. Western-themed paintings and sculpture fill the museum.

If the museum inspires you to shop for artwork, you’re in just the right community: Kerrville is filled with art galleries as well as antiques shops. Kerrville has long been a magnet for artisans from across the Southwest who have brought their talents to the Hill Country and used the surrounding hills as inspiration.

The beauty that has inspired these artists is easily seen in the many parks that surround the city. Kerrville-Schreiner Park offers seven miles of hiking trails, as well as fishing and swimming in the Guadalupe River.

An excellent place to learn more about the flora and fauna of the region is the Riverside Nature Center, located at 150 Francisco Lemos Street. This center boasts over 100 species of trees and shrubs and also features native grasses and flowers. The center is a certified Wildscape Demonstration Site, so keep your eyes open for everything from rabbits to lizards. Stroll along the walking paths, enjoy the wildflower meadow and butterfly gardens, or shop in the center’s gift shop.
