Monument Hill and Kreische Brewery State Historical Park
From this hilltop overlooking the Colorado
River, visitors have a spectacular view of La Grange and the surrounding
farmlands that spread out for miles. Monument Hill is a quiet place, fitting
for a memorial of two tragic events in Texas history. This is the burial
place for the Texans who died in the Dawson Massacre and the Mier Expedition,
two historic conflicts that occurred six years after fall of the Alamo.
A visitor's center explains the confrontations. The park also remembers a far happier time
in Texas history. Kreische Brewery was started here by German immigrant
Heinreich Kreische in 1849. he brewmaster purchased the hilltop and the
adjoining land, including the burial ground of those Texas heroes, for
his brewery site. Eventually he became the third largest beer producer
in the state. The kettles are long gone, but you can take a guided tour
of the ruins on Saturdays and Sundays. Although you can walk through the
brewery remains only on weekend guided tours, you can take the nature
walk to view the site any time. Location: From La Grange, 2 mi south off U.S. 77 on Spur 92, on bluff overlooking Colorado River Return to La Grange Travel Guide
